17. 12. 2009

Sou Brasileiro.

Today I was up bright and early with the birds to help prepare breakfast. Tati, Manu and the always reliable Luiz were among the many helpers to ready a morning feast fit for a king to rise for. An early night and a morning coffee had left me obnoxiously chirpy for that time of the morning which I put to good use, with the help of Rodrigo, as a slightly out of time human alarm clock. Everyone was very appreciative ☺.
Once breakfast was gobbled we played “adoleta” (a traditional Brazilian children’s game) which was good times and got everyone properly roused and ready for the day. The work was then allocated and everybody got into it.
There were people painting inside, finishing windows and a large group helping to work on the brick walls being constructed around the outside cultural area. (Which is living up to its name having been used to host a debate/talk on culture with the minister of coulter from Embu Guaçu the night before). I think a lot of people were keen to sink their teeth into some heavy physical work; hence the large group for a reasonable mellow job. But the more the merrier aye!
Lunch came and went, bellies were filled and then the usual post lunch scattering of bodies (vaguely resembling a battle field) followed. There was also some lunchtime soccer.
Just before we started work again the heavens opened and a torrential downpour let loose. The music was already full bore and the combo was too much to resist. Everybody should spend some time dancing in the rain I think, very very good time…
Once everybody had calmed themselves and dried themselves, work started for the afternoon. The jobs were much the same as the morning for the most part, painting and concreting, expect Simon and I got to have some fun. We needed to paint the stair well that goes up to the sleeping area and it was very high and quite sketchy. After a bit of deliberation we decided to get out the rope and harnesses. I was quite surprised that there was harnesses at all and they were in good condition. The same could not be said for the rope unfortunately, which was freighted and old and definitely not meant for its adopted purpose (abseiling), but you have to do things in Aramitan so we decided to go ahead. I climbed up and set the ropes in the rafters and we got into it. All’s well that ends well I always say and there were no falls so the actual strength of the rope and the not so sturdy rafters they were tied to thankfully were not fully tested.
For dinner we had a fantastic lasagne which left no complaints (even from the Swedish girls) only content smiles. Everybody is just chilling out now before we head into Embu Guaçu to go dancing for the evening which I have been campaigning as it is my last night here in Aramitan and my last chance to hang with the crew before I leave tomorrow.
All in all my stay here at Aramitan has been choice (meaning “legal” in Portuguese and “thumbs up” in English). It hasn’t been exactly what I expected but I think it has surpassed my expectations. I have made lots of good friends who I will hopefully see again before I leave Brazil and if not I think I will be returning!
Aramitan, good times, good friends, good night and it will be really good to see you all again!

12. 12. 2009 - The World March for Peace and Non-Violence

In order to speak about the march I must return to the 2nd October when it commenced in Wellington, New Zealand. In the month of December, after it had passed through many countries, it reached Brazil, Embu Guaçu, a municipality close to Aramitan. The day before the march took off here in Brazil many young people, including participants of the workcamp, came together to paint placards and banners in the “Parque da Vàrzea” in Embu Guaçu. Furthermore, that same night at Aramitan many people gathered to paint t-shirts and write messages for peace on them.
Saturday the 12th was the day of the march, however it was very overcast with threatening rain clouds. Nevertheless, after a hearty breakfast of coffee and homemade bread with spreads, we were ready to go and not disheartened by the weather.
While waiting for the bus to come and collect us from Aramitan, we practiced some songs in a circle. However, after some time the bus did not turn up so we decided to walk to the bus station, which is about one kilometer from Aramitan. Once we arrived at the station we finally found the much-awaited bus that took us to Cipo, where many people were anxiously waiting for our arrival. They warmly received us and we commenced the march.
There were between a hundred and a hundred and fifty people and the majority were wearing white shirts. Among the marchers were the mayor and his wife, the secretary of government of Embu Guaçu, the president of the city council, the director of Health and many others.
The march ended in the park where a stage had been set up. After we were welcomed and acknowledgments were expressed, the stage was opened up to musicians.
All in all the whole event was very interesting, and by Aramitan participating in such an activity, we were once again able to demonstrate our commitment to creating a culture of peace and a society full of confidence and hope for the future.

Ola!

Bom! Assim termino o meu relatório do dia 12 de dezembro de 2009.

What was up on Friday, 11th December in Aramitan?

The organizers of the workcamp met early at 7 o'clock to discus several points and to preview the special events for the weekend.

After breakfast everyone practiced together "Djige-djige djai popo" - a funny but challenging dynamic game adding new variations in the circle...Singing, dancing and organizing the daily work tasks, that is what we did till 9 o'clock. Afterwards we decided to tidy up all areas of the house, and then everyone resumed their task in their particular work area.

We had a special guest today: Olivia Girard from the institution “Freunde der Erziehungskunst Rudolf Steiners” / Berlin - Germany. She came with Tarita and was introduced to the Aramitan’s projects, our vision in the short and long term. Santiago showed her some areas of Embu Guaçu, including the neighborhood of "our family" we are supporting. She was shocked about the poverty and the difficult living conditions there, unaware of that side of her home country.
Surprised and impressed by our work and activities, she promised to support us knowing now what we are doing is beneficial and serious work. Hopefully we will be financially supported by her organization; the voluntary accommodation project is still our aim within this and the next workcamp in January - For this we need the construction material and the professional helpers.

I took part in our painting session with Christina from 11 till lunchtime - My personal challenge in the art class today was to focus on perspective. I will keep on practicing…

In the afternoon a smaller group went to meet with organizers and participants for the “March for Peace and Non Violence” which will take place on the 12th December Embu Guaçu. We prepared some banners and some participants got to know the Ecological Park, where the march will finish and where further events related to environmental consciousness and activism will take place.

Refreshed by a simple but delicious corn meal called Pamonha that we bought on the way to the center, and drinking a good Maracuja and Açai-Banana milk shake, we did a small shopping for dinner and went back to Aramitan.

Meanwhile those at home worked on the lower wall of the cultural center filling up concrete, kept on painting the windows, cut the grass, baked bread - good work was done.

Dinner went well - salads and a cake were appreciated and everybody was satisfied.

We still had another nice event: Paint our Aramitan T- Shirts, which we would wear on Saturday on the march for peace.
So we prepared everything on the tables and some people even kept painting till midnight.
I enjoyed that activity very much and I was glad with the result of this day.

Yesterday was a great day at Aramitan! It started with a really nice breakfast, the best we tasted since we've arrived last Monday. There was a lot of homemade bread on the table, cinnamon biscuits, different kinds of sandwich spreads and sweet mango... After the breakfast Santiago introduced us to a man who helped us with the construction work the whole day. Our task was to build a wall in the "cultural centre". Another good thing about this morning was that the sun was shining. As well the first time since we've arrived in Brazil! As it was quite hot, the work seemed even harder than usually (but we built up a lot of muscles). Before dinner, when we had finished with work, we could see a big difference and suddenly the hard work didn't seem so hard anymore. After a quick shower and dinner we left Aramitan for a trip to a cultural event in Monte Azul.
The busride to Monte Azul was an adventure for three swedish girls...It took more than two hours to get there. That's crazy! But we really enjoyed the evening! Brazilian beer, differnt people, culture and live music. Everybody was really nice to us, even though we didn't know anyone at the beginning. It became quite a late night and we went to bed (sleeping bag) at 2 am...

A gente brincava demais...

As we pulled into the graveled drive in the early evening the children were painting the wall that bordered the drive in beautiful, bright colours. It had been over three years since I had last been at Aramitan, and I was eager to see the changes that had taken place since then. After a guided tour of the house, I could see that the developments to the interior and exterior of the building were vast. I was extremely impressed with all the tiling and plastering that had been done, the creation of a new kitchen, a classroom, the construction that was in progress on the volunteer’s quarters, and the architectural developments on the front lawn. As we moved down into the cultural area, I quickly spied the newly functioning washing machine, and I remembered past work camps where we had stood over sinks elbow deep in soapy water hand washing our clothes, but this would not be the case at this workcamp!!
As the evening commenced people gathered for the Sarau, and after a lovely shared meal, a wide variety of performances took place on the newly erected stage in the cultural center. The Brazilian music played on into the night and the dancing commenced.
The next morning was Sunday and we had the day free to participate in different activities, outings were taking place in the city, in Embu-Guacu or at Aramitan. A group of us spent a warm balmy day at Aramitan reading, talking, going for walks and getting some of the basic necessities from the supermarket for the following day’s meals. Late that night a group of us gathered in the kitchen and talked over cups of tea. I felt very happy to be back at Aramitan, to see the wonderful transformations, to take part in the current projects and to hear about the ambitious plans for the future!

Porque? Nos todos juntos que legal
Beleza pura da nossa união
Tem espaço no meu coração
Amizade de amigo e de irmão.

Ola bom dia!
Hoje o nosso dia comecou
muito bem. 7:

02. 12. 2009

It´s ten o´clock in the evening and I am very full of an intense day. Maybe I start from the back:
We just ended the day with an interesting lecture about the history of Brazil, a bit of geography and about the situation of today with this big in-balance of rich and poor in Brazil. I realized how I like lectures during work camps, - if you worked the entire day with your hands, it´s nice to get something to think about in the evening. And if we already speak about doing and thinking, then the part of "feeling" was also represented today with the artistic work that I did. (very waldorfy;-)
The painting was the main thing for me today. The other practical work I did before and after painting was not very inspiring: We cleaned, or better scraped dirt of a big amount of windows. It was great to see the cleaned and shiny windows afterwards, but the work itself was the kind of work that needs to be done but is not so much fun. I guess that I learn the most from this type of work.
As I said the artistic part of my day was great! It was the second day that I worked with a few other participants with a documentation of the work camp through drawing and painting. We started the artistic work with a few practices to train the perception and then chose different work areas and painted or drew the other participants working. I like this artistic element in the work camp very much. It has a lot of potential and makes the documentation more interesting.
A work camp is really more than just work. Why is it actually called a "work camp"? It can be a meet-camp, a cook-camp, a dance-camp, a talk-camp, a laugh-camp, an art-camp, a sing-camp and definitely a language course... I realize more and more that those kind of projects and meetings of young people give so much to each individual that takes part in it. And I also see how much each of the participants contributes to this place here. ARAMITANis so rich of hundreds of hands that put a lot of care and hope into this building. Sometimes I forget it, but I am fully amazed by this place called ARAMITAN.

Ok, that´s it for today from my side. Bed is waiting...
